Military Travel - Useful TDY Travel Tips

If you have orders to travel TDY (temporary duty yonder), you have a choice to make it a smooth experience or a difficult time. From the moment you get to the airport, to the speed at which you are reimbursed for your out-of-pocket expenses after you return, a handful of tips can easily tip the scales in your direction. Why not avoid a bunch of frustration? Consider applying all the tips below, and you will enjoy your TDY. You'll become a travel specialist fast!

Tips and Information

A. Make one number out of multiple similar expenses by adding accurately.

Look at all the different taxes on a hotel room receipt. Add them up$2C and make that number: "Hotel tax," for example. Make it easy for the person reviewing your voucher to pay you.

B. Do everyone's job to make a smooth road for you.

Don't wait for DTS to contact you. After submitting, check on the progress of your voucher and take care of any problems fast. Be a "Nice squeaky wheel." You can call anybody repeatedly about anything as long as you are nice. You'll catch more bees with honey than with vinegar, and you'll get a reputation for being a military travel professional.

C. Join every travel club and get every travel advantage card.

Current rules let service members keep miles and points. You don't determine how you'll travel; the government does. Because you'll have so many cards, get something to carry all those cards in an organized fashion. If you start out organized, you'll find the points and miles add up. You'll enjoy that free flight or vacation down the road because you started out organized.

D. Keep your stuff neat in your hotel room.

It's easier to see if someone has gone through it while you were gone. It is also easier to "drag bag" when you're leaving a room because you are less likely to leave something behind. Military travel professionals don't find themselves frantically calling the hotel from the airport to see if the maid found a watch in the room!

E. Don't let your voucher sit there for five days on your return.

Complete your TDY by filing your voucher as soon as you get back. You'll appreciate getting your money back sooner rather than later.

F. Scan your receipts.

If you fax them they may not be readable. Check all your expenses twice. Do everything you can to make it clear and easy to process your voucher. Your professional processing of your voucher will be appreciated.

Before you leave for the airport on TDY:

1. Make sure that your orders are finalized.

You will also need a vocal order (VOCO). Take off without it and you may not get your money back for some expenses. Yes, you are serving your country but that shouldn't mean taking money out of your pocket to do it.

2. Make a TDY envelope for every trip.

Maintain an envelope with related Operations Order (OPORD). This envelope should also be home to your itinerary, orders, and receipts. Your life will be so much simpler if you keep all the papers from one trip in one envelope.

3. Does your travel card function?

Just before your travel date, buy some gum or a drink at a store and use it. Why be embarrassed on your trip? Make sure it works before you leave on military travel.

4. Pack early.

Look over your OPORD. Do you have everything? If you're going to a school, check on the net to see if you can get the packing list for that school. It is possible that you won't be able to get what you need where you are going - be prepared.

5. Print your boarding pass in advance.

This just saves you from one less potential problem. Why not put it in your pocket before you get to the airport? Be a prepared military traveller and perhaps wear something military like military rings to indicate your rank or profession.

6. Get to the airport two hours early, period.

Just carry something to read if you have extra time. The security process and the potential for problems with security means you'll want the time to keep your sanity should anything go wrong.

Build travel habits early which will serve you well throughout your career. You will enjoy TDY if you do. You'll live with less stress and more rest. Make the above tips into habits, and you will be a military travel professional. Have a great trip!

Travel Tips For Kerala

The state of Kerala is situated in the southernmost peninsula of India. Among the many states in the country, it is one of the most favored tourists' destinations for individuals not just in India but also across the globe. With the enchanting backwaters, many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, waterfalls, shopping markets, hills, mountains and beaches, the state has lots to offer the roving eye. When travelling in Kerala, vacationers may want to keep certain things in mind.

Considering Kerala is a tropical region, the climate is pleasant for most parts of the year. When visiting after September it is best to be prepared for some odd showers and advisable to carry along emergency rainwear. The coastal area is hot and humid and tourists are advised to wear comfortable clothes, preferably in cotton. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen lotion could also be carried along to beat the heat.

The state has a wide array of temples, but it is important for travelers to remember that not all allow non-Hindus to enter. Also when visiting the temples, it is best to be appropriately dressed while leaving footwear outside. Besides being a highly literate region, Kerala is also among the cleanest states in the country. Travelers are advised to follow the maintained standards of hygiene and refrain from dirtying the place. Also avoid bribing officials, as the state emerged as one of the least corrupted ones in a 2005 survey and could actually land you in trouble.

The backwaters spanning the state are known to be an important mode of inland navigation and besides offering a very enjoyable journey, they are also very convenient. Though the state is home to a number of beautiful beaches, those holidaying here must remember that nudity is not welcome. Like many other places in the country, smoking in public places is banned here too. For those not familiar with the national language Malayalam, a translation guide will be of great help. Though basic knowledge of English should also help travelers get around generally.

Smart Travel Tips for Smart Travelers

Travelling to a foreign land is not as easy as it seems. You need to put a lot of planning and foresight to get it right each time, every time. There may be times when you have to find cheap flights and tickets and pack your bags at a moment's notice and for that you have to be keep yourself ready for any exigency. As a rule of thumb, try and avoid going to destinations that are ridden with drought, flood, civil strife or war, even it means skipping a few exotic destinations.

One of the first things that you should do is to scan all your important identity documents like passports, driving license and save them in your email account. These would prove to be very helpful in case of theft or loss of luggage. Take extra care of your luggage and your personal belongings. It would be wise if you keep your wallet and other personal documents in your hand luggage and not in your check in luggage lest it might get misplaced.

Carrying too much cash in person may not be a good idea. It would be much better to carry internationally valid credit cards and debit cards for purchases abroad as most of them come with a purchase protection warranty. Traveller's cheques are also proven to be quite convenient for tourists. Convert and keep a substantial amount of local currency in your wallet as it will save you from the hassle of carrying wads full of cash.

Rising fuel costs have forced international air carriers to place restrictions on the amount of luggage passengers can carry. And therefore it is advisable not to carry too much luggage. Keep a lot of silk clothing as you can pack more in limited space.

Avoid taking jeans as they take too much time to dry or if you have some old clothes that you want to discard, you can take them along. This will ensure that you have more space in your suitcase for carrying return gifts and souvenirs back home. You can reward local people for the help they extend to you by gifting them the clothes that you don't want to wear anymore. They might love to have a few clothes in their wardrobe made of fabrics produced in a foreign land.

Once you land in your destination city, you should find out where the taxi stand is or better still arrange for a hotel pick up that will ensure that you don't get lost in an unknown city. Staying in a reputed guest house or star class hotels would help as that would ensure that you are not only secure but also get the best of food and comforts in an unfamiliar land.

Holiday Travel Tips: How to Lower Stress, Save Money and Have More Fun

Holiday travel stress has been immortalized in motion pictures such as "Plains, Trains and Automobiles" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." However, a holiday trip doesn't have to be so stressful if you know how to plan and make some savvy moves along the way. Here is some wise advice from expert travelers on how to save money and keep your sanity during the busiest travel time of the year.

Some Travel Statistics to Keep in Mind

Not surprisingly, Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's are among the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). During the six-day Thanksgiving travel period, the number of long-distance trips increases from the average by 54 percent. The BTS defines long-distance as to and from a destination 50 miles or more away.

Over the period between Christmas and New Year's, long-distance travel trips increase by 23 percent over the average. And while the media focuses their attention on crowded airports and flight delays, most Americans - about 91 percent - travel by car or other personal vehicle to their holiday destination.

The Orbitz Insider Index, which is based on travel website Orbitz.com's bookings in 2010, found that Christmas week - December 19 through 25 - was the busiest travel week of the year. While Thanksgiving Week - November 21 through 27 - did not make the top 5 list, November 24, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, was the single-busiest travel day of the year.

The takeaway from these statistics is: If possible, do not travel on the busiest travel days of the year.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Road Trip

Nothing can add stress to a road trip like an unexpected mechanical problem. If you do plan on driving long-distance this holiday, make sure your vehicle is in safe working order. Have the car battery, fluid levels, lights, windshield wipers, brakes, belts and hoses checked by a certified mechanic. Regardless of age, have the tires balanced and alignment checked. Also have the oil changed and fluids topped off, including coolant, antifreeze, radiator, transmission and wiper fluid, and replace the air filter.

Also pack smart for winter driving. A roadside emergency kit should include a spare set of keys, hidden in a magnetic spare key hider somewhere on the vehicle. It should also include a blanket, flashlight with fresh batteries, and tire gauge to check tire pressure throughout the trip. Keep extra food and water in case of an emergency in the trunk, and check your spare tire and jack. Obviously, fill the gas tank upon leaving.

If you don't already, sign up for roadside assistance policy. Consider buying a GPS system. They not only make finding your destination easier, a good GPS can help you find restaurants and points of interest along the way.

Fly Smart, Before and After You Book

When it comes to flying, your overall experience begins even before you step on the plane. The questions you ask prior to making a reservation and the preparations you make before you board will greatly influence how easy and enjoyable your flight will be.

Use websites such as Orbitz.com, Kayak.com, WhichBudget.com and LastMinute.com, FareCompare.com, Priceline.com and Yapta.com to search and compare the best airfares and times. Try not to fly on peak holiday travel days (listed above), or at the busiest business commuter times: Monday mornings, Friday evenings and Sundays. Instead, fly on the least crowded days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also book as early as possible in the morning, so if a flight is delayed or cancelled, you'll have a better chance of getting on another flight. If you're traveling out of the country, make sure you understand the country's passport requirements and have paperwork in order ahead of time.

Once your flight is booked, focus on packing for a stress-free comfortable flight. If possible, pack with a carry-on roller bag only - it will save you the hefty baggage fee and get you on the plane and out of the airport faster. If you're going to have to check luggage, pay your baggage fee ahead of time online, it's usually a bit cheaper. Also weigh your baggage ahead of time and make sure it is under 50 pounds to avoid having to pay an additional fee.

Pack a carry-on bag with your favorite snacks, so if you get hungry, you're not at the mercy of the airline's snack schedule. Remember, you can't bring water through the security check, so buy a bottle once you get to your flight's gate. Bring wet naps and hand sanitizer, as airplanes and airports are full of germs. If you wear contact lenses, bring a spare pair, along with your glasses. Also pack some books and magazines and a portable music player - they help make the time pass quicker.

The night before or day of the flight, print out your boarding pass online ahead of time. Make sure you're seat assignment is indicated on the airline's check-in page. Another holiday travel tip: ship gifts ahead of time so you don't have to deal with carrying and checking them on the plane. If you do plan on bringing them in your luggage or carry-on, don't wrap them.

Many Travel Tips That You May Have Overlooked

Traveling might appear very complex, but if you know what to do, where to go, who to ask for help, and more, you can have a great trip. If you don't know what to do, you can easily get lost or waste money on something you can get cheaper elsewhere. The tips listed below can help you avoid this.

Take the time to itemize package deals offered through booking engines or airlines. These combo deals seem very cost friendly but in some cases they are not. By itemizing and evaluating the prices you will be paying for each part of the combo, you may find that you are better off going with individual pieces and build your own deal.

If you are traveling to another country brush up on that country's laws. Some foreign countries have laws that you might view as a little strange or not expect. As a precaution, it is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the laws specific to the place you are visiting.

Don't take sleep aids until you've taken off. If you use sleep aids to help you get through a long flight, wait until after you're airborne to pop the pill. If you take them earlier, you run the risk being unbearably tired if your flight is delayed or you have to deplane and take a later flight.

Weighing your checked bags before you arrive at the airport can save you money and frustration. Many airlines charge an extra $50 or more for checked bags weighing over 50lbs. This can result in spending more money, or having to leave items behind. Put your luggage on a scale at home before you head to the airport to save yourself a headache!

Your cell phone may be virtually useless when traveling domestically or abroad depending on your cell phone plan and coverage areas. To ensure you are able to make calls wherever you are, purchase a calling card to pack in your wallet as a just-in-case measure. Calling cards can be used anywhere you have access to a public pay phone.

A useful tip for travelers is to make certain to have sufficient health insurance in place to cover medical expenses in case of injury or illness while abroad. It is often the case that domestic health insurance policies do not provide extensive coverage for treatment and hospitalization in foreign countries. Therefore, it is important to procure such coverage for the entire duration of your trip.

Don't hoard your frequent flyer miles. It's hard to know if those miles will be worth anything in the future, especially since many frequent flyer programs expire miles if they have not been used in eighteen months. If you don't want to use them on flights, most programs also offer magazine subscriptions and product discounts.

So as you can see, traveling is not as complex as it may appear. It is involved in terms of research, asking questions, and packing, but it is worth it in the end to have a great trip. With the above tips in mind, you should be smarter when it comes to traveling.

Cruise Travel Tips

Are you planning on going on a cruise? Well if this is your very first time, you may not be very sure what to expect. Having a few tips to help you out can be very helpful to you. So, here are some important cruise travel tips to keep in mind when you go on a cruise.

Tip #1 - Have a Carry On Bag - The first one of cruise travel tips that you'll need to remember if you're going on a cruise is to make sure that you have a carry on bag. Once you get on the ship, you'll want to visit your cabin but you can't expect your baggage to show up for awhile. So, it's a good idea to have a carry on that has some clothes and a few essential toiletries on hand.

Tip #2 - Get a Map of the Ship - Cruise ships are huge. You don't want to get lost and a map can definitely be a huge help to you. Make sure you have the map and take a bit to look it over so that you'll be able to more easily get around the ship.

Tip #3 - Walk to Where You're Going - When you are going to dinner or you are going to a show on board, you may want to walk wherever you are going. You'll find that the elevators are probably going to be full and often many people are trying to wait for an elevator and they may not be in a great mood. So, just go ahead and take a stroll and get a bit of exercise walking to wherever you need to go.

Tip #4 - Keep the Noise Down at Night - If you are out late at night, make sure that you keep the noise down. You don't want to go around slamming the doors of your cabin, since it can wake many people around you up. So, have some courtesy and shut your doors as quietly as possible to avoid encounters with grumpy cruise mates.

Tip #5 - Avoid Wearing Expensive Jewelry - When you are on a cruise ship, don't go around wearing your most expensive jewelry so everyone can see it. Ethiopia Adventure Travel Tips

In November 2010 my husband and I travelled around Ethiopia for 3 weeks by public bus with our private guide Samson Wolde. Travel (especially bus travel) is a real adventure and not for the faint hearted as there is long travel days (even longer if the bus breaks down) on poorly maintained roads. But it is an excellent way to get up close and personal and experience the life and culture of the locals.

Addis Ababa
We arrived at the airport at 3.30am. We had not booked any accommodation due to our early arrival so we stayed at the aiport till about 7am. A taxi agreed to take us into the city for USD$10. We went to the Ras Hotel where we had to wait till 9am to see if they had a room.
Travel Tip: We stayed at the Ras Hotel 3 times due to its central location. The price includes breakfast which is awful but lunch and dinner are good.

Bahir Dar
We stayed at the Ghion Hotel on Lake Tana and did a boat cruise to the islands to see the painted churches. The Blue Nile Falls area is pretty but not worth the long bumpy ride to get there. Since damming the river, the waterfalls are certainly nothing like the posters show.
Travel Tip: Check if a guide is included with your Lake Tana boat cruise. There was 9 of us on our boat. No guide accompanied us on the boat except for our private guide Samson. The first island we visited Samson acted as intrepreter otherwise we would have not understood what we were looking at. The second island we visited the church guide spoke English.

Gonder
The abandoned castles are very interesting and it is worth hiring the guides inside the gate.
Travel Tip: We stayed at the Belgez Pension which was cheap, clean and quiet but the rooms were very small and cramped. They do your washing for a very small fee - give to the cleaners in the morning.

Simien Mountains
We did a one day 4WD day trip with another traveller and our guide Samson.
Travel Tip: We would have liked to have stayed overnight even though we are not trekkers, as the scenery is stunning.

Lalibela
We spent 2 nights in Lalibela exploring the amazing rock churches.
Travel Tip: Keep your entrance ticket handy as they will be checked at each church entrance.

Arba Minch
Arba Minch is a overnight bus stop between Addis Ababa and Jinka.
Travel Tip: Spend an extra night on one of the stopovers and do the lake tour.

Jinka
We hired a 4WD locally to tour the main 3 tribes in the area (Mersi, Hamer and Karo tribes). We shared this cost with 3 other travellers who were on the bus and stayed at the same accommodation as us.
Travel Tip: Buy your bus ticket to Addis Ababa early (at least 1 day in advance) so you can obtain a better seat number otherwise you will find yourself stuck at the back of the bus on the 2 day journey. Buy good ear plugs so that you can block out the noise of the loud music videos playing.

Transport
We used a variety of transport that included: public bus, minivan, 4WD and boat.
Travel Tip: If you find that quite a few of you are heading in the same direction, it will be more economical and comfortable to rent a minivan and driver like we did from Bahar Dar to Gondar (7 people).

Tour Guide
We used the services of a private guide. This was the first time we have hired a guide for the entire trip through a new country. The guide proved invaluable in keeping the touts away (worth the money alone), dealing with local tour operators and obtaining hotels.
Travel Tip: Use a private guide's extensive knowledge and experience to enjoy Ethiopia through the eyes of a local.

Name - Elwynn Jones

Website - http://roughitinerary.com

Since 1999 my husband Gavin and I have travelled to 53 countries. Our shortest trip was 5 days and our longest was 7 months. We travel independently and map out a rough itinerary (hence our website name), as we know that our plans will change due to weather, local circumstances or finding out about other attractions not listed in the guide book. We have created this website to share our knowledge, experience and other details we have learnt along the way.

We used the services of Samson Wolde, a local Ethiopian guide who has been showing visitors the sights and sounds of Ethiopia for 25 years. Website - http://ethiopiaadventures.com

Air Travel Tips to Improve Your Travel Experience

Traveling can be a hassle for many people, especially when traveling by air. It most often ends up being a day of waiting around. When traveling by air you are required to check in at the airport long before the flight leaves in order to make it through all the long line ups and security checks. The process is even longer when traveling internationally. Travel equipped with these few tips to help make your experience as painless as possible:

Find something to fill your time while waiting for your flight and while on the flight. Not all airplanes offer movies to help pass the time so bring a book or magazine to keep your mind occupied. If reading isn't your thing try sleeping. If you are able to sleep while traveling this will definitely help the time go by faster.

Bring a small carry-on bag with only the things you need. Be sure to check before hand what is allowed in your carry-on and what is not. This will ensure a smooth process through security. If you don't check with requirements in advance you will end up being delayed and may end up leaving a few things behind that you won't get back. Be aware of the size of carry-on you are allowed to bring with you. Know what's in your bags and keep it organized so that you don't slow down the security check process for yourself and other travelers.

Arrive early. Don't think you can get to the airport just in time and breeze through all the line ups. Simply getting stuck in a slow-moving security line up can result in you missing your flight. Remember, several flights depart within an hour and everyone has to make their way through the same line ups as you. Be sure to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check in and get through security. You may be left waiting around to board but it's better to be early than miss your flight.

If the airport you are flying out of is not close to home consider getting there a day early and spending the night in a hotel. Many unexpected things can happen during your commute such as backed up traffic or car problems. Spending the night before in a hotel will eliminate any stress of arriving late or missing your flight.

Bring your own food and snacks. Most airlines don't offer meals during flight but do allow you to bring your own food.

Travel with a suitcase that stands out from others. Checking a black suitcase will make it hard to find amongst the others when claiming your bags. If your suitcase is a standard color add something to it to be able to better distinguish it from the other travelers.

If traveling with children be sure to pack snacks and items that will keep them entertained during the flight. It's easy for anyone to get bored on a flight, but more so for children. Bring books, coloring books, and quiet toys to keep them busy and help the time pass.
